Imbewu: The Seed

Weekdays e.tv (*194) 21:30 Soapie

Imbewu keeps fans on the edge of their seats with high energy drama and soapie twists and turns that could only exist in Soapieland. But how much do you know about know the people behind the characters? Dynamic and bold Raphael Griffiths explores his character Zithulele Bhengu’s mind…

What makes Zithu ticks? I love how he’s humble, family orientated, cultured and hardworking. As a young man, he knows what he wants and is building a legacy for his family. His only drawback is that he never thinks of himself. He’s always taking a backseat voluntarily. What’s been the biggest challenge playing Zithulele? I had to dig deep to get into his mindset and think like Zithulele. A really challenging storyline was this year trying to imagine losing a child, to put myself in a father’s shoes.

Have any actors or characters inspired how you play Zithu? A lot of actors, but definitely Damien Lewis and how he plays shady financial whizz Bobby Axelrod in the drama series Billions. How do you relate to your character? We share immense love for family… and being prim and proper. We have that in common so it’s easy to understand him. I don’t get his naïvety. I’m more cynical, but playing Zithulele has made me a better man. If you could play any other character on the show, who would it be? I would love to play the role of Phakade (Sandile Dlamini) who plays my father on the show. He gets the best monologues. Maybe I’ll get that role later in my career when I’m a bit older. NB! More on p21.
