The audacity!

The problem in the polygamous marriages in season 2 of Mnakwethu: Happily Ever After? isn’t the sister wives or their cat fights. It’s their husbands at the root of the problems…

-

The country was introduced to a group of aspiring polygamists in reality show Mnakwethu who don’t hold back on drama. With the help of host and popular polygamist Musa Mseleku, the men tell their wives that they’re taking second wives – and their decisions aren’t up for discussion. As if that isn’t dramatic enough, the men also introduce their wives to their mistresses, leading to explosive arguments onscreen.

But what happens to the trios after filming ends? As it turns out in spin-off reality series Mnakwethu: Happily Ever After?, the chaos never ends – you can rewatch the drama on Saturdays on Mzansi Magic or stream seasons 1 and 2 on Showmax (see more on p10). The sister-wives continue to clash and some of the men still cheat despite the fact that they’re living their dreams with two wives. And they’ll still sink to allnew levels to save face – like when one husband is accused of using muti to win his mistress’s heart – the audacity! Let’s just say that things didn’t end well for him when his lover found out that she was under his spell…

Here’s a reminder of the most outrageous man-mad moments.

GEZANI TAKES ANOTHER WIFE

It didn’t take long for MaCele to come to an understanding with her sister wife MaMkhize. They agreed that they would remain civil with each other and build a solid family with their husband Gezani, but the budding friendship is cut short when MaMkhize leaves the polygamous marriage. As a result, Gezani goes behind MaCele’s back and starts dating MaBiyela. The shocker isn’t just that MaCele is the last person to find out about Gezani’s infidelity, it’s that she meets MaBiyela at the reunion episode. As expected, MaCele feels betrayed and she tells Gezani that she will not accept MaBiyela into her home. “When MaMkhize left, Gezani struggled to convince her to come back. What if MaBiyela leaves, will he find another woman? So, am I going to suffer because I [allow] him to take another wife?” says the upset MaCele.

THEMBELANI IS IN HOT WATER

The men’s main concern in Happily Ever After? is that they keep secrets from their wives. Instead of disclosing that they’re dating another woman – with the potential of marrying them – the men hide their actions until it’s too late. Case in point? Thembelani invites his mistress MaKhumalo to his home while his wife MaMthombeni is at work. MaMthombeni returns early and finds her hubby getting cosy in the living room. Not thinking clearly, MaMthombeni rushes to the kitchen, grabs the kettle and throws hot water all over MaKhumalo and threatening Thembelani with divorce.

MBEJE’S LOVE POTION

The biggest bombshell in season 2 is when MaVilakazi alleges that her married boyfriend Mbeje, who is a traditional healer, used love potion to win her heart. At first Mbeje and his wife MaDanca dismiss the claims, but later Mbeje confesses to giving her muti to “strengthen” his relationship with MaVilakazi. MaVilakazi is so angry with Mbeje’s behaviour that she leaves the relationship. But Mbeje has his reasons for giving her a dash of love potion. “Maybe I did put in a bit extra, because when we make measurements, we can’t really be precise.”
