A fresh start
Get to know the new trio who’re taking centre stage in season 3 of comedy series Unmarried.
Between navigating their complex love lives and overcoming career setbacks, the newly introduced circle of friends in season 3 of local comedy series Unmarried stick together no matter what life throws at them – and they’re certainly going to experience plenty more challenges.
Set in Johannesburg, where the dating scene is tricky enough as it is, the comedy follows a trio of 20-somethingyear-olds besties. Whereas rigid fashion design student Rea (Mapula Mafole) is looking to make her big break and dress celebrities for a living, flamboyant social media influencer Enzo (Khanya Mkangisa) is torn between two lovers. As for vivacious Confidence (Florence Mokgatsi), she’s out to gain recognition in the male-dominated DJing industry. “The women became friends in high school. Initially, Rea liked the idea of hanging out with popular it-girl Enzo. After some time, Confidence joined them to create their trio and they’ve not looked back,” explains Mapula.
As the season develops, Unmarried explores the women’s sisterhood, the joys and downsides of singledom, and their journey to sexual liberation and self-discovery. “The subjects that are discussed in Unmarried are current and real. There’s also humour, suspense and drama between the trio that will keep viewers hooked,” adds Mapula.
SHIFTING GEARS
The biggest change in season 3 of Unmarried is the cast overhaul. By shifting the story away from Brenda (Renate Stuurman), Thembi (Thembisa Mdoda) and Claudia (Lunathi Mampofu), who were juggling motherhood, marriage and their careers at 30, season 3 is adopting a more youthful tone. The characters are vibrant millennials who spend more time on social media and nightclubs than they do in their apartments or at work.
In retrospect, the original characters’ destinies had been fulfilled. Brenda and Claudia found self-acceptance and contentment after their messy divorces, while Thembi got the wedding of her dreams and she’s living her best life with her new hubby.
Like the original cast, the season 3 trio are flawed and they sometimes make awful decisions. “We’re going to learn that the women hide secrets from each other and they also have uncertain issues and unresolved problems from their past that lead to jealousy and nasty spats,” says Mapula. However, the friends come together to resolve their issues.
