Radio silence

Gabisile’s broadcasting career is hanging by a thread and she’s got to step out of her comfort zone to save it.

-

When the bosses at K-Mash FM give new radio host Gabisile (Baby Cele) bad feedback about her show, she goes into panic mode and has to do something dramatic to keep her job. “She’s told that her ratings are dropping dramatically,” says Baby. “This show means so much to Gabisile, it signifies a new chapter in her life, a new beginning, so it being threatened affects her a lot.” And she’ll do whatever it takes to come out on top.

SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT

Like many people, Gabi isn’t just unfamiliar with social media, she’s uncomfy with it. But that’s something she needs to fix, explains Baby. “Social media is an integral business tool and while she likes to stay private, she’s got to expand her world. She’s not like youngsters who check their Instagram first thing in the morning. Even for myself as Baby, I ask my kids to help me with their simplest things and they’d mock me, but my focus is not on social media,” she adds.

STEP ASIDE, NKUNZI

Gabi quickly gets the hang of things though and she likes the live feature on Instagram. “She falls in love with going live on Instagram. I suppose it’s because it’s not too different from being live on the radio and connecting with listeners. One evening Gabi starts one of her live sessions and talks about self-love and how we should always surround ourselves with people who love us. And one such person in her life is her boyfriend Nkunzi (Masoja Msiza),” says Baby. But there’s a problem that pops up mid-stream when Gabi goes to the kitchen where Nkunzi is cooking. “All hell breaks loose. Gabi’s followers give her backlash because her partner is a known gangster and criminal, and people don’t take kindly to this.”

CHARITY STARTS AT HOME

While fans are still reeling at Gabisile’s public display of love for a bad guy, she’s almost off hosting a charity event. She may go alone though – as bad a guy as Nkunzi is, he doesn’t want to see Gabi lose her job or her dreams. “Nkunzi has been witnessing the backlash Gabisile has been receiving because of being romantically involved with him, so he considers not attending. He doesn’t want it ruined because of him,” says Masoja.

Baby says the event is important to Gabisile because “it’s to raise funds for one of her listeners who was being abused by her husband and kicked out of their home with her three children”.

It will mean a lot to Gabisile to have Nkunzi at her side, but she appreciates that he may be standing back. Will her listeners though?
