Staying power

Nkanyiso twists Mam Rebecca’s arm after he finds out that she owns The Black Door.

-

Not many people are bold enough to betray mobster Mam Rebecca (Linda Sebezo). She’s ruthless and she isn’t afraid to order a hit on her enemies – all it takes is a call to her goons and her rivals vanish into thin air. Despite knowing Mam Rebecca’s dark side, her daughter Boniswa’s (Gabisile Tshabalala) boyfriend Nkanyiso (Mzikayise Makroti) crosses Mam Rebs.

Having recently discovered that Mam Rebecca runs a brothel called The Black Door inside of her toilet paper manufacturing factory, Nkanyiso gives her an ultimatum. “He demands money in exchange for his silence,” says Mzikayise. At first Mam Rebecca considers murdering him, but he is the father of her beloved grandson. “So Mam Rebecca gives into Nkanyiso’s request on the condition that he’ll skip town and he agrees,” adds the actor. If there’s one thing that Mam Rebecca should know by now, it’s that Nkanyiso isn’t the type to hold up to his side of the agreement…

BACK IN BUSINESS

After handing Nkanyiso a bag full of cash, Mam Rebecca breathes a sigh of relief, especially because she has never trusted Nkanyiso. “Nkanyiso started dating Boniswa when Boniswa checked into a drug rehab years ago and he was an employee. Mam Rebecca believes that Nkanyiso took advantage of Boniswa at her moment of weakness,” says Mzikayise. But Mam Rebecca shouldn’t celebrate too early… Days later, Nkanyiso returns and pretends that nothing happened. Mam Rebecca is furious that he is back and she’s even more irritated when he makes more demands. “Nkanyiso has Mam Rebecca where he’s always wanted her: Eating from the palm of his hand,” reveals Mzikayise.

ON THE BACK FOOT

For the first time, Mam Rebecca is cornered. She can’t kill Nkanyiso, and if he remains alive, he might tell Boniswa about The Black Door. “Boniswa is in the dark about the brothel. She believes that her mom is an honest, hardworking entrepreneur,” points out Mzikayise.

As if Nkanyiso’s return doesn’t startle Mam Rebecca, soon after he makes a point to her that he isn’t going anywhere: He proposes to Boniswa. “He’s planning to bleed Mam Rebecca dry,” says the actor.

But with great power comes great responsibility and Nkanyiso should realise that Mam Rebecca isn’t afraid of anyone. “Mam Rebecca will find a way to get rid of Nkanyiso without hurting the people she loves,” says Mzikayise, suggesting that Nkanyiso and Mam Rebecca’s war is far from over…
