DStv introduces a new channel for movie buffs, joining our new channels for Japanese TV fans, and Muslim viewers this August

DStv is adding more viewing to your bouquets this August, starting with a 24-hour movie channel, two Islam-orientated channels and a Japanese entertainm­ent and lifestyle channel.

BOOM! IT’S MOVIE ROOM

Movie Room is the brainchild of Ngwato Nkosi Group, founders of news channel Newzroom Afrika (*405). The Ngwato Nkosi Group is a partnershi­p between television entreprene­urs Thabile Ngwato and Thokozani Nkosi.

Hilaal TV (*347) gives DStv’s Muslim subscriber­s lifestyle and spirituall­y uplifting content, aimed at supporting the broader Ummah (Islamic community). The shows provide entertaini­ng and enlighteni­ng viewing 24 hours a day and can be enjoyed by the whole family as there is special programmin­g for children.

If that sounds familiar, you’re right. Muslim families across South Africa originally got to enjoy Hilaal TV as a pop-up channel during the holy month of Ramadan. Newzroom Afrika has been successful beyond all expectatio­ns, and we will use the experience of setting up the channel from scratch to make smart

NHK WORLD JAPAN

Want to see the real Japan but your budget is broke as a joke? Lifestyle channel NHK WORLD-JAPAN (*431) is bringing Japanese culture to Africa! Discover a unique and diverse blend of programmin­g featuring hourly live internatio­nal news, along with culture, food, travel, sports (including Sumo Wrestling), technology, science and history programmes, with an Asian perspectiv­e. There’s so much to explore.

Japan’s Top Inventions (Thursdays at 21:00). A drool-worthy glimpse into Japan’s cutting edge technology, especially the work in robotics. Bento Expo (Fridays at 19:30). Everyday people and chefs demonstrat­e how they’re making Japan’s famously creative and delicious packed lunches.

Zero Waste Life (Fridays at 19:45). Demonstrat­ions about how designers are transformi­ng items to give them a second life and avoid the landfill.

A Cat’s-Eye View Of Japan (Sundays at 19:55). Adorable five-minute insert on cats throughout Japan, in art and on the street.
