THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

-

It wasn’t just fans who were upset and shocked when the show was cancelled after five seasons – the cast were devastated. “We were getting ready to come back for a sixth season. That wasn’t ever a question – season 5 went so well and it was on the cards. But then the network bosses at CBC Television pulled the plug and we found out online,” says Jean. “No one saw it coming and it was heartbreaking because we have so many more stories to tell about the Kim family.”

Kim’s Convenience had originally been renewed for seasons 6 and 7, but then the show creators Ins Choi and Kevin White left for undisclosed reasons and it was cancelled. “There was obviously a lot going on behind the scenes no one knew about,” says Jean. “The cast and crew came in every day and we got treated like insolent, naughty brats. It’s sad but that’s the way TV works. One day you’re the cat’s whiskers, the next day you’re out on the trash heap. I hope one day we (the cast) will reunite for a special episode.

Until then, we’re still as tight as a family and that won’t change.”

A spin-off series has been filmed called Strays, centring on Nicole Power’s character Shannon and her new adventures in the US.
