Wedding bells a’ringing

Mazwi proposes to Fikile, but will this fix their problems?

-

For a few years now, Mazwi (Musa Ngema) and Fikile (Refilwe Madumo)’s relationship has been like a well-oiled machine, even with its ups and downs. They’ve both been married before, so rushing into marriage was never really a priority. But when Mazwi proposed to Fikile recently, she accepted even though she was hesitant at first. But being engaged isn’t as smooth sailing as Mazwi thought it would be…

DISAPPROVING RELATIVES

Blending two families is hard, more so when disapproving Moroka elder Bab’Kenosi (Boikie Pholo) arrives and is instantly unimpressed by Fikile, says Boikie. “The Morokas want another princess, like Mazwi’s ex-wife Sphe (Pearl Monama). Not a divorcee with a troubled history.”

Humiliated, Fikile is determined to win Bab’Kenosi over. So she puts on the perfect makoti mask, dressing appropriately and being respectful. Adding to Fikile’s stress of being good enough is her teen daughter Didi (Neo Rapetsoa). After Fikile’s divorce, her children chose to stay with their dad in Cape Town. But Didi returned recently and it’s been downhill. “The plan to tell her about Mazwi’s proposal didn’t go very well. Didi was particularly angry at her mom for some reason,” Refilwe explains. And Bab’Kenosi’s presence isn’t making things easier.

RUDE GIRL

Fikile and Didi’s next chat turns into a screaming match, but Mazwi’s uncle Kabisi (Mpho J Molepo) comes to Fikile’s rescue. “Kabisi is old-fashioned and he believes that even if children are upset with their parents, they should address it with respect. So when he witnesses Didi being extremely rude to her mother, he steps in,” Mpho says.

THE OTHER WOMAN

Teenage drama and meddling family aren’t the only things putting the engagement at risk. Mazwi seems to be drawn closer to a woman who isn’t wearing his ring. Musa and Refilwe insist that Mazwi is over his ex-wife. “He’ll always care for Sphe. They’ve grown to be really good friends, even more so now that they are divorced and the Moroka family pressures no longer worry them,” Musa says. And Refilwe is certain that her character no longer feels threatened. “She believes that Mazwi is over Sphe and is committed to her. There’s a reason their marriage didn’t last.” But that could be far from true…

Zanele knew the warning signs but she wasn’t going to be walked over, Tracy was the only one who noticed Mazwi wasn’t okay, and Sphe warned Nkosiyabo to quit while he’s ahead.

IN THIS ISSUE

Lelethu is torn between being a journalist or a shareholder, Nkosiyabo reveals that he has ulterior motives for re-hiring his ex, and Kabisi is floored to hear what the Moroka elders have decided. Mazwi gives as good as he gets when his woman takes him on, the warden’s off-hand comments make Mpho suspicious, and Pamela has renewed hope after Sphe’s visit.

Lucy and Didi make a startling discovery, Detective Pele recruits his injured friend to bribe a nurse, and Tracy saves the day for her boss. Ayanda may finally be ready to move on, writing wedding vows becomes a team effort, and a double date turns into a double disaster for one of the couples. The warden is told that Mpho can’t die in his prison, and is the Diale couple’s problem bigger than they realise? Mazwi draws closer and closer to a woman but she’s not the one he’s marrying, and Nontle’s talk about relationships sparks an idea.
