Magnum, PI

Season 4 Wednesdays (from 12 October) M-Net (*101) 19:00

Last season left viewers with many questions when Higgins (Perdita Weeks, Catriona Hartdegen in supernatural period drama Penny Dreadful) waved goodbye to Hawaii to go to Kenya with Ethan (Jay Ali, Detective Singh in cop series The Rookie) for his Doctors Without Borders work. That meant lead character Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez, who’ll be joining drama series The Good Doctor next season) couldn’t profess his love for her – the one thing fans have been screaming for since the reboot premièred in 2018.

JUST SAY IT

“I want you to know that you’re my best friend,” said Higgins as she asked to speak to Magnum privately, which is similar to what he had said when he was shot during the season and didn’t know if he was going to survive. As we hop back into the red Ferrari that Magnum drives (it’s not his – it belongs to Robin Masters, the author that Magnum consults for), we can’t help but wonder if Higgins and Magnum will reunite? “We’ve teased this relationship dynamic for a while and the audience wants to see what’s going to happen,” says Jay. So it’s no surprise when Higgins returns to the Hawaii mansion, but it’s not going to be right away. And until then, Magnum is going to try fill that Higgins-shaped hole in his heart.

Lia Kaleo (Chantal Thuy, Grace Choi in superhero series Black Lightning). “We’re two months into the relationship, so it’s still the honeymoon phase where things are sweet and tender,” says Chantal. “It’s a good phase where you’re still uncertain about how things will develop, but you’re open to see [where it leads].” But the more Magnum gets into his new romance, the more he pines for Higgins. “Magnum isn’t this soft lovey-dovey guy. But you can see that he wants Higgins back at the estate and not just because he likes working with her,” says Jay.

MAN OF MANY TALENTS

While Jay is investigating cases and trying to put baddies behind bars on screen as Magnum, he also got to spend time behind the lens directing a couple of episodes. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time, so I pressured the right people at the right time,” says Jay. “It was quite a tight fit – logistically time management is a big thing and

I’m in the frame in the episode while directing. I would be on set preparing for a monologue and then on set picking out what a cast member is going to wear or what car they’re going to drive. My time was measured by the second.”

But that doesn’t take away from the action – Magnum and his pals are going to be investigating everything from an apparent suicide, to a groom who’s hiding a secret past. “Magnum isn’t the kind to turn away a client, big or small. He’s got a heart of gold and will always try to do right by those who’ve been taken advantage of,” says Jay.
