Born To Kill?
Season 5 SABC2 (*192) 22:00 Doccie
What drives a person to commit murder? That’s under the microscope in doccie reality series Born To Kill? as the investigating team offer insight into why some people are born inherently bad. “They’re innately horrible people. Some are made by the lives they live, others are born that way and they don’t think they’re doing anything wrong,” says series narrator Christopher Slade, who also provides the voiceover for true-crime doccie series Killing Spree.
But while the show focuses on the killer and their motives, it also goes more in-depth and investigates the psychology of the criminals and their victims. “We try to find out why the killers thought it was okay to commit these crimes, as well as how they were able to lure their victims close enough to do this,” explains Christopher. “We get insight from psychologists and psychiatrists and it’s interesting to see how the victims were targeted. There’s no such thing as random crimes when it comes to the killers we’re featuring.”
There’s no shortage of serial murderers for the show to investigate, but Christopher says that they’re very careful when selecting subjects. “We look at the situation, how they killed, were they caught, how were they caught, what did the courts find during their trials. All of those factors play an important part, since we need to look at our subjects and be able to get a story that’s factual and insightful.” But there’s always one slight obstacle to overcome. “We need to speak to the victims’ family. And that’s touchy. Some of them say the wounds are still too fresh and we have to respect that and find someone else,” admits the narrator.
