A battle of the in-laws

They say if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!

-

“Makoti, are you a better cook than your mamazala? Are you dying to prove it? Is she ready to prove you wrong in the ultimate cook-off, and is he – your hubby and her son – ready to risk it all and settle the score once and for all?

Let’s see who the boss of the kitchen is!” says Nomsa Buthelezi Shozi, calling all wives and their mothersin-law to go head-to-head in the kitchen in order to win the hearts, or rather stomachs, of one man: Their son and husband respectively.

Imagine having to choose who cooks your favourite dish between your mother and significant other? In the third season of Mama vs Makoti, this is the name of the game as the husband decides who the best cook is.

“In the first few seasons it was the mamazalas who were the winner, but this season I think it’s quite a tie,” says host of the show Nomsa. “I felt like they had an upperhand because it’s their son, they gave birth to them, so they know what they like. They have cooked for these men for years.”

This season the menus will be a variety of old-school traditional food cooked by the mamazalas and boujee food like seafood made by the wives. And then the big decision comes!

IT’S OLD SCHOOL VERSUS NEW SCHOOL

“The wives are testing and tickling the palates with dishes like stir-fry while the mamazalas remind their sons of home with something simple such as beef stock and tripe. One of the makotis had never seen or cooked tripe – it was hilarious,” says Nomsa, adding that a lot of conflict comes from these situations.

“There’s always so much drama when the makoti doesn’t know how to cook pap or when she is a really good cook and the mamazala wasn’t prepared. There was a makoti who didn’t win and cried. She even told her husband that he must go back to his mother’s house,” Nomsa spills.

IT IS ALL ABOUT LOVE

“There’s drama but it’s fun drama, it all comes down to the love they have for the man they have in common. Yes, there’s always that secret dynamic of animosity between a wife and her mother-in-law, but in all 26 episodes, the women love each other and you hear stories about the first time they met their mamazalas.”

As a host, Nomsa is tasked to bring the opponents together and show them their similarities, turning it into a love story. “I have to make it fun!” she adds. This season will show interesting characters like one of the mothers-in-law who is a maskandi singer but never had the opportunity to pursue music.
