BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK!
Deirdre completed her Bachelor Of Arts degree and Performers’ Diploma in Speech & Drama at the University Of Cape Town, and she’s worked in theatre, television, film and radio for years. Did you know that she’s also been on radio? “I spent years behind the microphone as afternoon drive and breakfast news anchor for the SABC radio station Good Hope FM,” she says. “I’ve also been in about 100 radio dramas, serials and poetry programmes on Radio Sonder Grense and SAFM.”
Deirdre also works as a voice artist in local and international radio and television commercials and documentaries, as well as recording audio books in addition to being a dialogue coach. Some of her theatre work includes Shakespeare productions of Macbeth, The Two Gentlemen Of
Verona, King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and she has twice played Gertrude in Hamlet.
Deirde won the Best Actress Award at the Dublin International Theatre Festival in 2006 for Ashraf Johaardien’s Happy Endings Are Extra. She received a kykNET Fiësta Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Charles Fourie’s Agterplaas 2012, and her most recent theatre production Ella’s Horses – also by Charles Fourie – received an Audience Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival 2014.
And 7de Laan isn’t Deirdre’s only TV role – she’s been in Meeulanders, Soutmansland, Backstage, Deeltitel Dames, Khululekha, Orion, League Of Glory and loads more, as well as movies like Jimmy In Pienk, Hollywood In My Huis, Vir Altyd and The Killing Floor, having been made a permanent character on
7de Laan in 2016.
