The Chipmunks were inspired 1 by the 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz. After watching the high-pitched voices of the Munchkins, Ross Sr used a record player to mimic the nowfamous voices.
The trio were named after 2 record executives at Liberty Records. Alvin (named after Al Bennett), Simon (after Si Waronker) and Theodore (after Ted Keep).
Ross Jr and his wife have been 3 voicing the Chipmunks for over 50 years ever since Ross’s dad Ross Sr, who originally voiced them, passed away in 1972.
For the 1964 album titled The 4 Chipmunks Sing The Beatles Hits, Ross Sr met with The Beatles in person to ask permission to use their songs. “Back in those days, you could sing any song and pay for the license. My dad however had such respect for them, he flew out to London to meet with them to get the okay from the band,” Ross Jr recalls.
Although Alvin & Co are over 50 4 years old, wild chipmunks only live up to two to three years.
