THE CROWN

One of the most anticipated moments in season 5 Netflix’s recreation of Princess Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) notorious 1995 interview with Martin Bashir (Prasanna Puwanarajah). In July 2022, the BBC publicly promised never to air or licence the real-life interview again, after an inquiry exposed Martin Bashir’s unethical access to Diana. Nonetheless, Diana said what she said, including shockers like…

• On Prince Charles’s reaction to her popularity with the press, Diana admitted, “With the media attention came a lot of jealousy, a great deal of complicated situations arose because of that.”

• On her relief at producing heirs, she said, “William and Harry, fortunately two boys, it would’ve been tricky if it had been two girls, but that in itself brings the responsibilities of bringing them up, William’s future being as it is, and Harry like a form of a back-up.”

• She revealed that the royal family were far from sympathetic of her postnatal depression: “Maybe I was the first person ever to be in this family who ever had depression or was ever openly tearful… it gave everybody a wonderful new label, ‘Diana’s unstable’.”

• And most notoriously of her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, Diana said, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded during that time.”

• Binge The Crown season 5 from Wednesday 9 November on Netflix.
