Tut’s 100th birthday!
Peek inside DStv’s treasure room and discover a glittering horde of shows about Tutankhamun and ancient Egypt.
“As my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist: Strange animals, statues and gold – everywhere the glint of gold,” archaeologist Howard Carter wrote in his diary. The day was Thursday 24 November 1922, and he was taking his first look inside the glittering tomb of a minor boy king of ancient Egypt: Tutankhamun. What he found sparked a global Egyptomania – that moment has been the stuff of dreams for would-be archaeologists the world over.
November 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the expedition’s discovery, when a water carrier came across a long, flat stone that turned out to be the top of a buried staircase leading down into the tomb. DStv is throwing a King Tut party to celebrate, with specials and features on National Geographic (*181) and Discovery Channel (*121).
Tune in for a fresh perspective on the expedition, the treasures and the tomb, and the most recent discoveries from modern Egyptology – including the remains of an ancient jewellery workshop.
