Investigation implosion

It’s safe to call Mthambisi “uPhunyuka Bemphethe” – he who slips through fingers even when caught.

-

In a world where corrupt police officials interfere with the justice system, knowing that a few good cops still exist is comforting. Mondli (Thembinkosi Thwala) is one such cop – his latest case has been trying to nab Mthambisi (Buyile Mdladla), but it’s hard to conduct a thorough investigation when you are being sabotaged by the same people you call colleagues. His superiors pull the rug out from under his feet and order Mondli to call off his investigation. “Mondli feels betrayed by his bosses and the law, because he already suspects something about Mthambisi and he already has leads that can lead him to Mthambisi’s closet,” says Thembinkosi.

SECRET INVESTIGATION

Mondli might be feeling let down and disappointed, but he’s not about to let his hunch go, more so after spotting radio host Gabisile (Baby Cele) in a compromising position, he knows something is up! “Everyone knows Gabi’s love for bad boys. She’s in a relationship with KwaMashu’s biggest gangster Nkunzi (Masoja Msiza) . . . Mondli takes this as a sign to continue digging,” explains Thembinkosi. “I won’t say much as I can’t give everything away. Mondli suspects that something isn’t right, so that means he needs to be alert in whatever he’s doing.”

A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE

Things aren’t going to get easier for our favourite detective – he’s going to be framed by someone within the police force. “There’s damning evidence against him, but Mondli is innocent,” explains the actor. “At this point, he’s just very confused, but he’s more desperate to prove his innocence and for the truth to come out.”

But while Mondli is trying to break free, his target is hard at work covering his tracks. “He’s always a step ahead of Mondli. Mthambisi has eyes and ears all over town and he has more than enough money to cover his dirty work, so trying to nab him won’t be an easy task,” says Buyile.

THE LAST STRAW

“Mthambisi’s contacts are hard at work and are doing everything they can to stop Mondli from continuing with his investigation. His career is on the line,” Thembinkosi says. “The only thing that he can do is to find concrete evidence – somehow – to implicate his crooked bosses and the man he’s after. But that’s difficult . . .”
