This Came Out Of Me

Season 1 Saturdays (from 3 December) TLC (*135) 21:00

Apatient comes into the emergency room squirming and shaking with a live moth in his ear, another has a shard of glass in her eye. A doctor has to be discreet when a woman needs help because she’s lost a you-knowwhat up her guess where! And one patient comes in with a stiletto heel lodged in her eye following a particularly vicious street beatdown. These aren’t sensational new episodes of medical drama series like Grey’s Anatomy, Good Sam or The Good Doctor. This is reality. And as the patients in two new TLC series kick, wriggle and cry, so will you!

STUCK

Medical records reveal that over 500 000 patients visit clinics and hospitals every year in the United States because they have something stuck in their body. From the classic toddler with a pea up their nose, to a splinter in the foot – it’s all in a day’s work for doctors and general surgeons to remove it and send them on their way. This three-episode series was filmed at the paediatric emergency centre at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospitals, where Dr Larry Mellick got permission for patients to include their sessions in his educational emergency medicine YouTube videos. As well as seeing the moment of extraction in real time, we’ll hear the stories of how patients got stuck, and medical staff will reveal why extraction can be more complicated than just yoinking something out. Look out for: An arrow through the hand, pencil in the throat, stingray barb in the shin, and even a fake fingernail in the ear canal.

THIS CAME OUT OF ME

ER physician Dr Ruby Rose (not the actress from Batgirl) hosts this fourepisode series that was filmed in SignatureCare Emergency Centers throughout Texas. Each case asks the question: How did that get there? The series covers everything from a patient with a glass shard in her eye, to cockroaches and a moth in people’s ear canals, and a toddler who’s swallowed an entire princess doll. But sometimes the body itself creates things that shouldn’t be there, like cysts, ingrown toenails, bone fragments from accidents, and painful abscess anywhere from the gums to the bottom.

Dr Ruby explains that the doctors at her centres are trained not to trust appearances but to ask loads of questions because a patient’s medical history could complicate even a seemingly simple case… or an embarrassing one that the patient would rather not talk about. Look out for: strange fragments in a wound, and a patient who vanishes part way through treatment.

Blood vs Water as a theme stands out in the Survivor world, where friends, romantic partners and family members make up the 24 castaways. “That kind of connection is going to be tested in this season because they’re not all going to be on the same team at the start,” says Jonathan. “We’re going to see how they fare when they’re apart, then hopefully see how they work as a team after the merge.” It worked well in the US version, where bonds were either strengthened by the separation or weakened. “You’ve got to remember that Survivor as a whole is a social experiment. It’s a fly-on-the-wall look at not only what people will do to survive, but how we as humans are able to either strategise for that survival or be beaten by naivety.”

There are a couple of twists to this entertaining season besides the US star, says Jonathan. “We have a few tricks up our sleeves at the Tribal Councils that we’ve never featured before. And there is going to be an interesting offer to the winning team during a Rewards Challenge that will see just how much they care for their significant others on the opposing team. We’re here to push the boundaries with what people are willing to do and it’s one of my favourite themes in Survivor. So to do it with my country’s version is an added bonus for me.”
