Nathan Fillion returns as Officer John Nolan in action show The Rookie, the oldest rookie in the LA Police Department’s history. “This season is going to test all of the characters,” explains Nathan, admitting that he doesn’t know how his character is still standing. “He’s gone through probably the craziest midlife crisis I’ve ever heard of. He’s been framed for crimes, he’s buried friends, he’s been shot, held hostage, faced off with wild animals – and that’s on top of a divorce that upended his life and sent him to the LAPD in the first place.” So, what does the new season hold in store?

& Lois) will intensify. “We chose to have a firefighter character to keep intensity. Bailey and John work in dangerous jobs; we didn’t want them to only be emotionally supportive of each other but to literally be involved with one another’s work. That’s going to be exciting,” says Nathan.
But with every addition – Jenna went from guest to permanent cast member – there must be sacrifices too. “I won’t ruin the storyline but we do lose a friend or two during the season. We made sure they were ‘okay’ with leaving and they agreed with our plans. That made it easy to find a way out in a storyline and to give the character an honourable exit rather than drop them during the off season,” adds Nathan. “Our viewers deserve characters to leave in a dignified way. We’re protective of our family and we take care of those who’ve made The Rookie a success.”
