Fast-paced telenovela Imbewu adds fuel to every fire that soapie viewers love. From divorce and infidelity, to secret love children and business wars – you name it, the soapie has it. And one character who’s had more than her fair share this year is Shria Rampersad, played by Kajal Maharaj. “I love that Shria is independent and strong, she’s a fierce woman. Many female fans have told me they want to be like her, a no-nonsense woman,” says Kajal.
While Shria throws her weight around the boardroom and takes “it” to her male counterparts, Kajal says her character’s feminine side is what she loves most. “I adore how she dresses. She definitely has style and whether it’s a powersuit or a flowing gown, Shria always dresses to impress,” says Kajal. “I love how she stands her ground. She doesn’t let anyone push her around. I’m not like that in real life. I’m a small, timid human who doesn’t like confrontation. Shria is the opposite.”
Kajal says her character is meant to be an inspiration to fans at home. “Ambitious women who place their family above all and everything will love and relate to Shria. Women who stand tall even when the world puts them down. She’s a firecracker and people love her spark.” Kajal adds she would love to take her character’s wardrobe home because it’s like putting on a superhero costume. “Shria is always dressed up and I’m mostly in tracksuits and sneakers. Getting into her shoes – literally and metaphorically – is like an incredible experience because there’s so much about Shria I admire. She’s got an attitude about her that has been a hit with our women viewers.”
