GREAT DAY FOR YOUNG ATHLETES

- LONDIWE PEARL XULU

The uMngeni Howick Academy held a track and field on Sunday after a 20km race for adults from Howick West stadium to the entrance of Mpophomeni and back to the starting point. After the race, they hosted children from the age of five on a track and field event.

Chairperson of the training club Ntokozo Mlotshwa said they had 100 metre to 800 metre races and cross-country with 40 local children.

“We are training these kids and want them to stay fit and enjoy athletics,” he said, adding that involving children in the club would hopefully keep them from drugs and other bad influences.

Mlotshwa, who said they do training with children every Sunday, described the day was a huge success.

“We would like to thank Fairfield Dairy for their very kind donations of juice and milkshakes.”

Anyone interesting in sponsoring training clothes and shoes for the children, to encourage them to take part in the athletics programmes, is invited to donate using the banking details: Nedbank account name: uMngeni Howick Academy, savings account number: 2015839542.

Or they can contact Mlotshwa on 073 492 3882.
