Great rock stars never die. Instead, they live forever in our minds and hearts thanks to their music.
That’s the premise behind Who Wants To Live Forever, the latest show created by music raconteur Rob Boyd, with the help of local music legend Brian Bedingfield and theatre-maker, Paul Spence.
Last year, the trio teamed up for the wonderful Tom Waits 70s retrospective Heart of Saturday Night, so their new show will be a treat for music fans.
Who Wants To Live Forever which is being staged at Music in The Hills at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm in Hilton, at 9 pm on Wednesday, July 27 – will include songs by the likes of Freddy Mercury, Buddy Holly, Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and Michael Hutchens, amongst others.
The music will be performed by Bedingfield, Gareth Barry, Roly Struckmeyer, Paddy Austin and Mark Butler, with Kath McClelland on raw and raunchy Joplinesque vocals.
There will also be dancing from dynamic duo, Nadja Bartel and Bonwa Mbontsi, and a character cameo from grande dame, Dee Bedingfield.
Spence, who directs the show, said the MiTH performance would be a “tantalising, mouth-watering taster” of the fantastic rock show coming soon to a theatre space near you.
Before Who Wants To Live Forever, MiTH fans can enjoy a performance by Erin Fourie and Alan Strang at 8pm.
Fourie has been on the Midlands music circuit for almost 20 years and regularly performs around Hilton and Howick. Her acoustic folk style has been likened to Joan Baez, among others.
She has performed in numerous cabarets at the Hexagon Dive, was a top 10 SA Idols contestant and even managed to snag a role in The Sound of Music at the Durban Playhouse.
In recent years she has collaborated with several local musicians on various projects and is delighted to showcase her current work with Strang.
The latter has had a strong interest in music throughout his life, particularly in the areas of Scottish and Irish traditional music and folk music.
A self-described ‘late starter’ on the music scene, he became actively involved in the Buskers and TJs Acoustic Music clubs in Johannesburg.
Principally a singer, Strang also plays guitar and enjoys creating harmonies with other musicians. He has recorded and performed often with the Waldorf String Band, latterly becoming a regular member of the band.
Opening the night’s music at 7pm is Rosie Whitfield, a singer, songwriter and pianist, born and raised in the Midlands.
She began playing piano at the age of seven and has been composing her own pieces since the age of 12. She identifies as a contemporary folk artist whose work has been influenced by artists like Nora Jones, and Celtic Women.
Tickets for MiTH are R50 in cash of via Zapper at the door. Doors open at 6pm. Bring your own booze. Food and soft drinks are available for sale.
