Musicians rally together for Barry Meintjes

-

If you’re a KZN Midlands musician or music fan, then you will know Barry (The Captain) Meintjes.

The former member of the

Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters is gravely ill, and to help cover his considerable, ongoing medical costs, the local arts community plan to unite on Sunday, September 4 for a special fundraising concert at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm in Hilton.

“Between noon and sunset over 20 of the Midlands’ top musicians will play at Bands for Barry II,” said spokesman, Charles Webster.

“It’s been 10 years since The Captain’s first benefit concert, held after he fell off a wooden deck and lost the use of his legs.

“The musicians will pay tribute to one of our longest-standing musical legends by performing a variety of old favourites and original compositions at the family-friendly event.”

In addition to being the long-standing bass player of the Hairies, Meintjes ran Marshall Music Midlands and (in the latter capacity) has been a patron and/or benefactor of the now-retired Midlands Musicians Club and its successor, Music in The Hills.

“More than that, he's just a much-loved human,” says Webster.

Tickets for the concert are R100 for adults, R50 for 12 to 16-yearolds; under 12s get in for free. Food and soft drinks will be on sale.
