GARDENER’S CORNER

- JUDY DUGGAN

Springtime is a season of hope, joy and cheer, there’s beauty all around us to see, touch and hear. God never sends the winter without the joy of spring!

There is so much happening in the garden the agapanthus, clivias, babianas, gazanias, vygies, nemesias, Michaelmas daisies to name a few indigenous flowers.

Then there are all the spring flowers: foxgloves, petunias, pansies, aenothera, allysum, lobelia and poppies so many to choose from.

Always remember to deadhead your flowers as they will go on flowering for longer.

The swallows will soon be back after their sojourn up north, returning to their beautiful mud nests they built last year. Quite amazing how they find their old nests and hope nobody has broken them down.

Look out for bugs and snails. Snails like to hide in pots and under leaves. When you find them drop them into salt water.

September is the month to feed your garden, as many shrubs and plants have been pruned and cut back it is easier to feed. Use an organic fertilizer and compost or leaf mould and water.

It’s also time to sharpen lawn mower blades for the summer and as the weather gets hotter make sure your bird baths are full every day.

Veggies: cabbages, cauliflower and broccoli seedlings will do well now, as will lettuce (in shade), beetroot, green peppers, carrots, tomatoes and green beans.

Happy gardening.
