HOWICK HIGH SPORTS AWARDS

On the evening of October 13, Howick High School held it sports awards ceremony after a two year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The guest speaker was Travis Warwick-Oliver, aka 'Turbo Trav', a local hero who had a below knee amputation and has a passion for ultra-distance trail running.

The school thanked him for sharing his story with the pupils and for inspiring its athletes to rise to any challenge they may face, both on the sports field and in life.

Howick High also congratula­ted all its sportsmen and women for the immense contributi­on they have made to all sports codes at the school. The following awards were presented:

• Outstandin­g contributi­on to sport: Hayley Muller, Daluxolo Mbhele, Justyn Marquhardt, Sbongakonk­e Radebe;

• Basketball player of the year: Sarah Arnott and Keagan Vermeulen;

• Junior Award for cross country: Ezra Robertson;

• Cross country, longest distance: Michael Finch;

• Junior Award for cricket: Jessica Candler;

• Most improved cricketer of the year: Rory Lake;

• T20 cricketer of the year: Tristen Graham;

• Cricketer of the year: Travis Pitout;

• Junior Award for hockey: Thingo Ntombela and Kaytee’lee Biggar;

• Most promising hockey player: Sarah Arnott and Mfuneko Myeni;

• Hockey player of the year: Mary-Lynn Cotton and Keagan Vermeulen;

• Netball player of the year: Noleen Sekukhune;

• Most improved rugby player: Alwande Sibiya;

• Best 7s rugby player: Tristen Graham;

• Best rugby forward player: Ayanda Makhaye;

• Best rugby backline player: Jayden Kruger;

• Most improved soccer player: Megan

• Golden Boot soccer award: Rachel Tegg and Darryn Whitehead;

• KZN soccer representa­tion: Thingo Ntombela, Brooke Segal, Jessica Candler, Nikita Enslin, Abigail Holmes, Megan Tyrer, Mikaya Naidoo, Mary-Lynn, Cotton, Sarah Arnott, Rachel Tegg;

• Soccer player of the year: Rachel Tegg and Alwande Sibiya;

• Most improved squash player: Hannes Jacobs;

• Squash player of the year: Wernich Fargher;

• Swimmer of the year: Jenna Ferreira;

• Tennis player of the year: Mary-Lynn Cotton and Colin Robertson;

• Highest sporting achievemen­t: Jessica Candler;
