REGIONAL SAILING CHAMPS AT MIDMAR
The 2022 Soling and Dart double handed regional championships were held at Henley Midmar Yacht Club this weekend.
Eleven Darts participated, with Kim Phillips and Mathew Olson taking first place, followed closely by Noah and Fynn Clulow. Murray May and Kimè Brits were third.
“It is so encouraging to see brothers Noel and Fynn Clulow teaming up and doing exceptionally well after their recent High Performance Youth sailing camp,” said Steve Hegerstrom, SA Sailing KZN chairman.
Six Soling boats took to the water. The event was won by Warwick and CJ Despy, with Paul Crooke with Laura Barrett, Jerome and Conner McLoughlin as crew, and in third place Derek Wilkes with Mark Flack and Thomas Yas.
At the prizegiving, the Commodore commended all the sailors. He also commented on the number of youth that have come through the Midlands Sailing School based at the club and shared his vision for the new training facility that was kindly donated and installed last week at the club.
In other news, 23 youngsters participated in the recent learn-to-sail camp held at Henley Midmar Yacht Club during the first week of October. Fourteen had never sailed before, and nine were back to hone their skills.
Led by Refeloa Zililo, from Durban, with assistant instructors, Aaron Ward, Tristan Uys and Kime Brits, the children first went through some fundamentals of sailing including knots and reading the wind.
There was plenty of on-the-water experience too and by the end of four days, all the participants had learned the basics and were able to sail!
The next sail camp takes place from December 20 to 23 and January 3 to 6. Contact Alistair Clulow at 084 580 0269 for more information or visit the HMYC website.
