Lights festival moves to Capture Site

-

The Nelson Mandela Capture Site will be illuminated as part of his year’s Light Up uMngeni Festival on Saturday, December 17 and Sunday, December 18.

Last year’s Light the Falls event took place in Goddard Park, near the Howick Falls, but the organisers, uMngeni Tourism have been forced to make a change.

One of the reasons is that the exciting upgrades of Howick falls are planned to start in 2022, and the other being the cultural significance of the 60th anniversary of the arrest of Nelson Mandela at the Capture Site and bringing attention to this important part of our local history.

uMngeni Tourism is also appealing to vendors to get in touch so that the community can be offered the best in locally produced products at the event.

“We want to showcase our local creatives, makers, designers, producers, bakers, artists and foodies,” said JP Prinsloo, chairperson of the community tourism organisation.

“For those of you that are creative, whatever your art may be - chilli sauce makers, Christmas bakers and toy creators, we need you. We would love to showcase artisanal culture at the festive fair.”

Businesses in the uMngeni area can also get involved in the festival by sponsoring a tree, which will lit up on the night.
