WHO PUT THE HUMPS BACK?

-

As a resident of the Greendale area, I must add my grateful thanks and relief to whomever in the municipality authorised the resurfacing of Amber Avenue by the high school.

Fabulous finish and speedily completed job.

Relief was extended when several of the absurd and obsolete speed humps were also removed from the road.

Alas, after spending hundreds of thousands of Rands removing potholes and other artificial obstacles from the road and providing us with a superb surface some numpty has ordered the replacement of the missing humps.

Seven speed humps in less than one kilometre! Do we really live in the most dangerous road in Howick?

Far from protecting nearby schoolchildren, these humps actively encourage appalling driver behaviour, such as unexpected U-turns and sudden lurches into traffic right outside the school.

In addition to damaging vehicles’ tyres and wheel rims at any speed, ironically they also accelerate the destruction of the road surface.

They cause massive increases in fuel consumption. Goodness knows how much unnecessary extra fuel is burned by the residents of the Ambers, for example, as they crawl over the stone-age speed humps encountered on the hill out of Howick.

The answer to this absurdity is for drivers to look out of the car window, be aware of surroundings, drive sympathetically and, as

I have, buy a Range Rover to smooth out the humps.

Baffled by primitive thinking.

The mayor and his team are to be congratulated on the turnaround they have achieved since coming into office.

They have made the council debt-free in less than a year. Where else in South Africa does one find such an achievement?

One can now phone the council office with confidence that the call will be answered. In the previous 10 years of my residence here, it is a first.

The mayor is concise in his response to criticisms and he gives rational answers as opposed to previous vague ramblings and obfuscations.

The work ahead is a long list but already we see improvements in the roads and parks.

A call or message to a councillor is returned promptly, even on a Sunday, nogal!

I am proud to tell others in which town I live and boast that it is truly halfway to heaven.

Well done team!,
