SPCA RESCUES DOGS ABANDONED IN WOODLAND

- ESTELLE SINKINS

UMngeni-Howick SPCA is appealing to local residents to help them with food after they rescued 11 dogs, which were abandoned in a forest.

Dudu Abraham, operations manager at the animal welfare organisation, said she received a call from Field Security in Greytown, saying they had come across a pack of dogs in a local patch of woodland.

They had contacted the Greytown SPCA, but it was unable to take the animals as its kennels were full.

“We couldn’t just abandon them,” Abraham said, “so we arranged to meet with our colleagues halfway Should be between Howick at Greytown and Rietvlei.

“There were only 11 dogs handed over to us. Three were missing. We think they ran away when people approached.”

Abraham said the animals were in a shocking state. “They had not been well looked after and we weren’t sure when last they had eaten,” she added.

The dogs, most of which were cross-breeds, were placed in five kennels, which had been kitted out with warm blankets and food.

“Luckily, the dogs we had in for treatment had been sent home, so we had some room, but even if we didn’t, I would have made a plan. Greytown is not our area, but we would never just not go out and help,” Abraham said.

“They are very sweet dogs, wag their tails when they see you and are so appreciative of any little scratch you give them and a kind word.”

The SPCA vet was due to check the dogs’ condition last week, following their arrival at the kennels.

Abraham said they would remain in the care of the SPCA and would not be returned to their owners. If you can assist with food for the dogs, please drop off a donation at your local supermarket or the SPCA’s premises in Campbell Road.
