PRETTY AWESOME LINE-UP AT MITH
Pretty Olifant will be headlining this week’s gig at Music in the Hills (MiTH) at the Knoll Historic Guest Farm in Hilton.
Olifant is a witty, mischievous and unwavering free spirit, a social entrepreneur, brand manager, poet, and vocalist. She was raised in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, and marries her love for music with a passion for poetry in Pretty & The Music.
This eclectic sound zig-zags across African rhythm, soul, jazz, ancestral sounds, reggae, rhythm and blues, all with an underpinning undertone of poetry.
Joining Olifant at MiTH on Wednesday, November 16 will be Mthobisi Mthalane, a professional pianist, composer, song arranger, voice trainer, and producer.
He has a diploma in jazz and popular music from the University
of KwaZulu-Natal and has worked with the likes of Dorothy Masuku, Camagwini, Ntando, Zulu Boy, Rebecca Maloepe, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Benjamin Dube, JubJub and the Jaziel Brothers, Madala Kunene, Vusi Mkhize, Maisha (multi-racial rock band).
Also on the bill is N’den, a musical duo consisting of vocalist Thulile Zama, and pianist David Smith, who met in the early 2000s while studying music at UKZN.
Smith has always had a passion for music, and was a member of a very successful jazz/hip hop band, Big Idea. Zama, meanwhile, is the lead vocalist of the successful all-female contemporary jazz band, Heels Over Head and well-known on the jazz circuit. Her talents have taken her to Hamburg and Berlin, Germany, and New Orleans, USA.
Since 2017, they have both been part of the Tributes to Mama Africa/Sophiatown band.
The opening act is 17-year-old Bradley de Klerk, a novice in the music industry, who is based in Howick.
His involvement in numerous musical theatre performances, as well as a variety of musical ensembles at Michaelhouse has equipped him with the skills to start performing solo. Bradley is mainly selftaught and brings a unique sound to the songs that he performs.
MiTH takes place every second Wednesday of the month. Doors open at 6pm and the music starts at 7pm. Entrance is R50 at the door. Bring your own booze. Food and soft drinks are available for sale.
