8. An Aweh Migo mural finds a special home in De Doorns
Aweh Migo creates large-scale murals locally and internationally. The artist’s latest, Soar, flies freely at De Doorns Primary School in the Breede Valley.
Aweh Migo – aka Garth Wareley – has been a muralist for just shy of two decades, and recently spent four days in De Doorns with his brother, Matthew, documenting the process of creating Soar. “VKDB Architects hit me up about the space at De Doorns Primary School – and I appreciate that they trusted me with this awesome project,” says Aweh Migo. “It’s also the first piece I’ve produced for the Western Cape Education Department, so I’m pretty proud and really stoked with the outcome!”
The mural’s content emerged from a drawing workshop the muralist had recently attended with Nathen Mayne, who is an associate professor in astrophysics and planetary climates at the University of Exeter in the UK. “Professor Mayne got me looking into the climates of various planets as well as the relationship between science and creativity,” says Aweh Migo of the inspiration behind his design for Soar.
“The De Doorns mural is a celebration of children’s endless imagination, and the true potential they could reach if nurtured. I hope that when people see it, they’ll feel encouraged to get out there and play – regardless of their age.”
Next up, Aweh Migo is working on the interior walls of a student residence, and a couple of privately commissioned pieces. He’s also looking forward to several creative trips to Johannesburg this year as he continues to pursue his goal of creating large-scale, impactful works of art.
