WHERE WORK MEETS ART

Meet the co-working concept at ROAMWORK that’s changing the way we want to work.

The co-working spaces of 2021 – thanks, pandemic - are already renowned for the importance they place on creative, inspiring interiors. No point in foregoing your own WFH nook and beating the office apocalypse, only to land up in a place that’s less inspiring, right? As Roamwork MD Darren Epstein explains, “Co-working spaces need to distinguish themselves from traditional corporate offices by offering something different: not just a home away from home, but a space that allows for different touchpoints or places to work, depending on your mood.”

Even so, many beautifully appointed co-working spaces would be hard-pressed to compete with Cape Town’s East City gem, Roamwork. Opened in December 2018, Roamwork embraces a visual ethos that’s not just creatively inspiring, but that fully supports local design and decor. Art Gazette – an online contemporary art platform that connects artists with interior designers and corporates to curate art-first spaces – has taken on Roamwork’s local-is-way-beyondlekker interiors, and curated an art collection worthy of its own exhibition. Featuring work by local artists such as Cameron Platter, Athi-Patra Ruga, Dale Lawrence, Paul du Toit and Zolile Phetshane, Roamwork’s creative energy is driven by its look and feel.

The thought that goes into co-working spaces du jour is markedly different from the office space design of days gone by. Forget one-size-fits-all work environments with cubicles and glass, and instead imagine a layout that best suits the needs of all of its varied workers. Standing desks, couches, high desks and low – and if you’re into hotdesking, there are ergonomic chairs along plugged-in James Mudge tables. Need a break? You’ll find Andrew Dominic tables in a corner full of Haldane chairs, perfect for taking a breather in. Working walls, couches, meeting rooms, an eating area – and it’s all in a neighbourhood that pulses with the heartbeat of the inner city.

Co-working spaces understand the way creativity and personality are challenging traditional workspace norms, so there are flexible working packages and additional super-nice-to-haves such as generators and plug-andplay meeting rooms. But, more than that, there’s the fact that you can cycle to work, then have your bike cleaned while you grind; that there are lockers and showers; that it’s pet-friendly; that there’s great coffee on site (thanks, Bootleggers!); and that you have an entire community of like-minded creatives to tap into when your flagging spirit needs checking.
