Man dies after beer-drinking competitio­n

MADRID: A 46-year-old Spaniard participat­ing in a beer-drinking contest has died after downing seven litres of the beverage, Spanish media reported yesterday.

The rules of the contest, staged in Gea y Truyols in the southern Murcia region on Wednesday, requested that participan­ts drink as much beer as possible in 20 minutes.

Hospital watchman Joaquin G A won the competitio­n with seven litres. But he then started vomiting, fainted, and died on the way to hospital.

The village festivitie­s featuring the event were called off. Gea y Truyols decreed three days of mourning. – Sapa-dpa
