On the money, honey

- WENDYL MARTIN

Café: My Basaar Address: 16 Loop Street Contact: 021 421 6391 Twitter: @bernicebasaar Hours: Weekdays 7am to 4am Dish eaten: Flapjacks Price: R45 I’M A sucker for flapjacks, even if they are served with honey-soaked bacon.

My Basaar offers my favourite breakfast treat in a stack of three, with a little bowl of cheese, strips of crispy bacon, banana chunks and honey.

Breakfast is served all day, but the options were few, so my colleague and I were both drawn to the dessert treat.

My colleague described it as a medley of flavours that worked. “The sweet and savoury of this dish was something I never thought I would get used to, but there I was, desperate for my fried flour fix. Mixing salty bacon with sweet honey and tangy cheese provided a fun meal that changed tastes with each bite.”

My Basaar is a pleasant City Bowl treat on the corner of Riebeek and Loop streets. Being a corner shop, it is accessible from two doors.

The shop has the food market theme. It plays country and jazz music, has brown paper for tablecloths, and there’s navy blue bunting strewn across the ceiling, chalkboard menus and Chinese paper lanterns.

The service was friendly enough. Although I waited a long time for my colleague to arrive, the staff were fine with me just having coffee and said I could sit there all day if I liked.

Books by owner Bernice van der Merwe are dotted on shelves and window ledges, and are for sale.

If you are feeling like something more traditional for breakfast, My Basaar has the usual egg breakfasts. Lunch options are chalked on a large blackboard.

To take the edge off the cafe has an alcohol selection covering a few beers, Scotch, brandy and gin.

They also offer takeaway meals, catering and cake orders.
