Recognising courageous journalism

- STAFF REPORTER

WEEKEND Argus reporter Kristen van Schie won two prizes at the Standard Bank Sikuvile Awards this week, for her reportage on the Central African Republic and, as part of sister publication The Star’s team that covered the breaking story of Reeva Steenkamp’s shooting.

“Two short weeks of heavy reporting in the CAR were built on the back of months of research, planning and nagging – it’s difficult to convince people to pay attention to a problem elsewhere when there are still so many being tackled here,” Van Schie said.

“I can only hope this award will encourage South African media owners and editors to invest in on-theground reportage across our continent.”

Argus photographer Cindy Waxa was named one of five finalists in the feature photographs category for her photo Ritual Entry to Womanhood, published in Sunday Argus.

The Star’s Makhudu Sefara was named editor of the year, and the paper’s photographer Antoine de Ras journalist of the year for his picture of Oscar Pistorius.

The award for investigative journalism was shared by the Witness and the Sunday Times. Jonathan Erasmus, Mhlabunzima Memela and Rowan Philp won for their article “Jay Singh uncovered” in the Witness.

Rob Rose, Stephan Hofstatter and Mzilikazi Wa Afrika shared the prize for their article “Its official: Dina Pule lied”, that appeared in the Sunday Times.
