Capturing wide world of travel in all its glory
Travel2014
CONGRATULATIONS to Gill McIlmoyle of Norfolk Park for her picture of the Nine Emperors Festival in Malaysia.
“I was on holiday in Penang and a local invited me to the festival. It was one of the most amazing evenings I have ever had.
“I took this picture of a ‘medium’ who after going into a trance had an 8m-long spear plunged through his cheek before he took a seat on one of the floats in the parade.”
The runners-up are Gerald Leo Schaffer of Sea Point for his picture of Oxford Street in the West End of London and Paul Naylor of Melkbosstrand for his picture of the Brukkaros Mountain, 135km outside of Keetmanshoop in Namibia.
Schaffer recently visited Oxford Street.
“It’s Europe’s busiest shopping street and has in excess of 300 shops. In spite of the exceptionally high number of locals and tourists I was surprised to bump into another Capetonian on an escalator in one of the shops.”
Naylor recently hiked into the basin of the Brukkaros crater. “We drove to the campsite halfway up the Inselberg and spent a night there. We hiked into the basin of the crater where one can still find beautiful crystal fields. There are also the ruins of an old Smithson- ian Observatory built in 1926.” Competition rules: ● All photographs must relate to travel, and you may enter as many times as you like.
