Fresh evidence of city serial killer
POLICE say they have uncovered new evidence against a suspected serial killer and rapist being investigated in connection with six bodies of women found near the Century City train station.
Kahangayi Sedumedi, 30, of Gugulethu, was arrested earlier this month and appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Yesterday police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said: “The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s involvement in more cases are being investigated, and we are pleased to announce that significant progress is being made.” Sedumedi is expected back in court in March. Fears of a serial killer in Cape Town started after the bodies of six women were found between the Century City and Acacia Park stations, land owned by Transnet, over a 10-month period from last February. The most recent body was found on December 19. All the bodies were those of women of the same race, and apparently within the same age group.
While police never confirmed the killings were the work of a serial killer, Traut referred to detectives having investigated “the multiple murder and rape cases perpetrated in and around the Kensington area”. He said Sedumedi faced the following charges:
● Murder for a killing in Kensington in December. ● Rape for an incident in February last year. ● Robbery – one count for an incident in Goodwood in February 2013, and a second incident in May that year.
