Jacob Kaimenyi said the institution had been closed following consultations with the university senate.

They also went to Garissa General Hospital where injured were receiving treatment and counselling from Kenya Red Cross Society officials.

At the hospital, the two were told how the four hooded gunmen opened fire on the students. One patient told them the men spoke fluent Swahili.

police operation, but the gunshots were close and indiscriminate,” one of the survivors told Nkaissery.

Security sources said the number of dead could rise following the discovery of more bodies last night. Some had been shot in the head, while others had their throats slit with knives.

Most of those died are believed to be woman students since it was a female hostel that was taken over by the attackers.

The university has been cordoned off by the Kenya Defence Force since Thursday, but yesterday reporters saw the bullet- ridden wall of the hostel where the attackers held the students hostage.

Another security officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the attack appeared to be well calculated.

About 5.30am security at the gate was always relaxed as local were allowed in to pray at the university’s mosque. Security forces eventually shot and killed the attackers. – The Standard
