Survivors tell of terror as anguished families identify bodies

- ROBERT MANYARA

NAIROBI: Anguish has gripped the families who had loved ones working and studying at Garissa University College.

Sanuti Barasa Waswa and Rosina Nafuna Wanda have yet to trace their 22-year-old daughter Selpha Wanda, a third-year BA education student. Waswa said yesterday they last saw their daughter in September when she left for university.

“She called me two weeks ago to find out how we are, and she assured me that she would visit home when the semester ends,” said Waswa, her foster father, who lives in Kakamega County, in western Kenya.

Nafuna, who was on her way to Nairobi to find her daughter, said: “I’m on my way to check the bodies if my daughter is there.

“I hope my daughter is alive wherever she is,” Nafuna said.

A Swahili message written by a student to her boyfriend went viral on social media.

The message, by Janet Akinyi, read: ““Baby, they are coming for us, we are next. Where are the Kenya Defence Forces team to help us we are going to be killed. If we don’t see each other baby know that I love you so much. Bye.” – ANA-Xinhua
