Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
Don’t break the law
YOU’LL be fined the equivalent of R10 000 for chewing gum – and should you be caught throwing that gum and its wrapper away, then brace yourself for a fine of 1 000 Singaporean dollars – another R10 000 – for littering.
Jaywalking in Singapore is a serious crime for which you can be fined up to R10 000.
And those with a habit of not flushing the loo after use may have to pay a R15 000 fine.
Other things to avoid: ● Smoking in places not designated for smoking equals a fine. ● Painting graffiti. ● For littering, repeat offenders are fined the equivalent of R50 000 and are sent out to pick up litter in public as a way of shaming them.
Retailers sell fridge magnets and T-shirts emblazoned with lists of offences for which you can be fined.
