Nestled on the corner of Church and Rose Street, the eaterie has the look and feel of a cosy neighbourhood cafe.

I walked into the cafe this week thinking I was smelling bacon frying. It turned out to be macon, an appropriate choice for the neighbourhood. Batavia is a scrupulously Halaal establishment It also sells a variety of gifts and accessories.

It occupies the spot once used by Haas which is now in Buitenkant Street.

The cafe looks small but don’t be fooled. It has tables outside and a little seating area in front of the main counter – but the cafe stretches past a small flight of stairs into a high-ceilinged room lined with knick-knacks. Turn around a corner and you will find a courtyard decorated with Chinese lanterns.

For breakfast I ordered the Spanish omelette: An egg folded over with a filling of cheese, caramelised onion, mushrooms, tomato, sliced potato and mild chilli.

I was sold on the potato, being a lover of anything to do with the starchy tuber. It was an addictive meal that I sliced through and enjoyed without a pause.

The coffee set me off to a good start. It was served on stoneware crockery of my favourite variety. The roast was solid and gave me a decent perk-up for the morning.

My colleague tucked into the salmon omelette (R65) which was filled with salmon, rocket and cream cheese.

Elsewhere on the menu I noted The Crafty Board – a section that allows you to assemble a breakfast.

It’s a good option for a picky eater and starts off with eggs your way and toast (R30) to which you can add sausage (R10), feta (R10) or other ingredients.

Batavia has been open for about seven months and seems to attract a good balance of tourists and locals.

In keeping with a rustic theme, some dishes are served on a board: Not my favourite serving option but I fortunately had a plate.

If you get a chance, be tempted by the ceramics and bags on sale. Or if you are out of pocket, perhaps a koeksister to go. Batavia has daily lunch specials and WiFi. Twitter:@WendylMartin
