Probe into death of minister’s daughter

POLICE have been left baffled by the death of the daughter of Zimbabwe’s higher and tertiary education minister, Jonathan Moyo.

She was found dead in her Rosebank apartment last Saturday, with allegations emerging that two men are wanted by police for questioning.

Police said they had opened an inquest into Zanele Moyo’s death, but have declined to comment on whether two men are being sought.

This week

speculation started mounting that the 20-year-old may have been murdered. A photograph emerged, showing streaks of blood along a passage, apparently inside her Rosebank apartment where her body was discovered.

The high commission of Zambia in South Africa initially issued a statement appealing to the two men to hand themselves over to police.

They then issued another statement saying there were no suspects in the case.

Provincial police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said an docket into Moyo’s death had been opened.

She declined to comment on the photograph apparently showing the inside of Moyo’s flat, or whether two men were wanted for questioning.

Friends found Moyo’s body in her flat. She was a secondyear student at UCT.

The case has sparked widespread interest in Zimbabwe, with President Robert Mugabe conveying his sympathies to Moyo’s family this week.

The high commission of Zambia in South Africa named the two men, who were reportedly the last people to see Moyo, and added that the one man had apparently introduced Moyo to the second man, who had liked Moyo and had started going out with her.

He reportedly used her cellphone on the Wednesday before she was found dead to call one of her friends. He told the friend “Moyo was passing out”.

On Thursday the High Zambia Commission in South Africa issued an updated statement saying while it was saddened that two Zambian men were apparently linked to the matter, there were no suspects in the case.
