Fees protest

-

To quote Bob Dylan “don’t criticise what you don’t understand, your sons and daughters are beyond your command”.

What we see is a stone that began to roll long before Nkandla, at which place the arrogance, cynicism, deaf ears, disregard and lack of leadership thickened the moss and hastened the rolling. – Shan, Stellenbosch

These students are South Africa’s future. Their frustration, anger and appeals should summon us all to serious and urgent attention. What do these scenes say about us as a society? What is the nation’s way forward?

When these protesting students eventually qualify and secure responsible jobs, I sincerely hope that they will sign an employment contract accepting that the salary offered is “one for life” with no annual increases. By the way, that is called Utopia. – B Robinson, Anchor Bay

Shame, B Robinson of Three Anchor Bay, do you know what the difference was way back? You were fortunate to get a job straight out of school, unlike us blacks. We had qualifications but couldn’t get

jobs. – Nazeela Dollie, Rondebosch

Knowledge should be free as ignorance comes at great cost. – Nielen Kurt Gebhard.

My high school taught me not to distinguish between races. We are a human race. Education is a right in our constitution. We are all entitled to it.

It is ultimate hypocrisy for the ANC to blame universities for protests when it is their own doing for cutting subsidies by about 50 percent.

Gwede Mantashe says the ANC should march with the students. I hope the students turn on you, opportunist. – Peter Williams, Steenberg

Why are the good universities kept for those who can afford it? Why am I not given a bursary based on my race? Violence is not the answer. but we are entitled to a debt-free future. Let’s stand with our students and fight for what we all deserve. It’s not fair that we should pay R60 000 a year for an education. – Khalieda Osman

Capitalism properly managed creates jobs. Socialism and nationalisation robs entrepreneurial ambition and drive and thus progress. What we are seeing is a government lacking leadership.

Student protest: a nation is not built on people running around doing the “hier kom die Bokke” thing. It is, among other issues, built on real matters like the current student protest for a better integrated government provided affordable education for all of our children. Come on people, educate your minds. Its the only weapon you have and need. – Roger Christians, Muizenberg

There seems to be a lot of uninformed persons who cannot see the bigger picture.

Out of the mouths of babes shall come truth, and the truth shall set us free. Prices must fall.

Why do the students think they are alone in price increases? What about the pensioner buying food at the till?

Well done, government, give the students what they want so they will do it again. The future leaders of our country, ladies and gentlemen. And we wonder why SA is going to hell. – Debbie Simon
