Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
In praise of the bountiful burger
It doesn’t matter if you prefer a full-size or a slider, if you are Banting or vegetarian, this festival has something for you, writes BIANCA COLEMAN
WE have festivals for everything in Cape Town. Like it? Yay, let’s have a festival! And now there’s the first Burger Festival, taking place today and tomorrow at Jan van Riebeek High School in Tamboerskloof.
Vendors will be serving up dozens of deliciously different burgers, full-size or as sliders, with options for vegetarians and Banters.
Mondiall will be there with its wagyu cheese burger; Rack ’n’ Grill has a rib burger on its menu; there’ll be smoked brisket burgers and smoked pulled pork burgers from Pitmasters; and Sticky Fingers BBQ will let you top your chicken or beef burger with egg, bacon, cheese, avo, jalapenos, and/or caramelised onions.
And Fat Harry’s takes care of the Banting option with a beef patty topped with a portabello mushroom, smothered in veg sauce and served with salad.
It will also be serving a free range lamb burger with rocket, tzatziki and hummus, served with sweet potato fries and onion rings.
Justin Baillie from Flavourful Events said: “This is the first Burger Festival in South Africa and we wanted to showcase a unique food concept in an environment that brings people together to support local producers.
“Burgers are much more than fast food, with more and more people having a burger as a meal each week from the many different restaurants located in the beautiful city of Cape Town. “Our goal is to grow the festival into a world-class showcase of what Cape Town and its people can bring together when it comes to a unique food concept such as The Burger Festival.
“Our mission is to create a platform where professionals can promote their brand, sell their product and grow their business.
“We want to start a movement/ platform where businesses work together towards a better future. We have craft breweries, chefs, restaurants, artisan food stands, live music from artists and wine all from the Cape Town area.
“The festival is about celebrating the world of burgers, a unique concept which is held at a venue that has a beautiful view of Table Mountain. Giving back and bringing
