Time to try some genuine surf and turf

Kenilworth Racing offers the chance of a flutter and plenty of prawns, writes BIANCA COLEMAN

TODAY is a particularly good day to go to the races because it’s also the Cape Town Prawn Festival, which is becoming one of the most highly anticipated events of the horse racing season in the Western Cape, and part of the Summer of Champions series.

“We want to attract both existing fans of horseracing as well as a new target market to Kenilworth, and this annual event does just that,” said Jenna Potgieter, marketing manager at Kenilworth Racing.

The main races will be the Vasco Prix du Cap and the CTS Chairman’s Cup (both Grade 3). Besides the thrill of watching the sleek thoroughbreds thundering down the home straight and cheering them on – hopefully while holding a winning ticket, there will be loads of entertainment for the whole family and, of course, the prawns. Lots and lots of prawns. Get stuck into a kilo of them for R149 – the price includes chips, rice and a choice of periperi, lemon butter or garlic butter sauces. In the Somerset Room punters can have a seafood extravaganza lunch, which includes a bottle of white wine per couple for R350 a head.

It’s good that we live in a world where we have a thing called the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (Sassi) and that people ask questions about where their shellfish comes from.

“There have been some concerns voiced regarding where we source our prawns and we would like to assure everyone attending that we will once again be getting them from Breco Seafoods,” said Potgieter.

Breco Seafoods, based in Milnerton, has been importing and exporting seafood and supplying reputable South African wholesalers and retailers for more than 20 years. It imports vannamei prawns from India which are farmed in mixed fresh/salt water ponds and are not sea caught, thereby not contributing to any unsustainable pressure on the natural resource, said managing director Etienne Braun.

“We are an active participant of the Sassi retailer/supplier participation scheme, which engages key national retailers and restaurant franchises together with their suppliers to help drive transformation in source fisheries and fish farms.”

The entertainment includes a DJ will keep the crowd entertained and for the children, jumping castles, a 4m climbing wall, pirate ship, junior obstacle course and rainbow slide will cater for all age groups.

Sand art will be available at a nominal fee of R25 a card. There will be ice cream on sale and entertainment from juggling artists and soccer performance artists.

Racegoers will stand a chance to win appliance giveaways to the value of R70 000, with a grand prize worth R20 000. Winners will be drawn throughout the day in the winner’s circle and will need to be there to claim prizes, as well as have a valid ID or driver’s licence.

“Bring the whole family and let the children enjoy a host of entertainment while you enjoy world-class horseracing and devour delicious succulent prawns,” said Potgieter.

Entrance to the track is free. Gates open at 11am and the first race is at 2pm. Parking is on Wetton Road.
