Four clubs waving a flag for top honours

- MIKE DE BRUYN

THE men’s Flag and women’s Muter cup competition continues today and both Premier Leagues are being fiercely contested.

In the men’s event, Constantia, Stellenbosch van der Stel, Glen CC and Edgemead are in the running for silverware.

Constantia and Van der Stel, who meet today, are deadlocked at the top of the 10-team standings on 64 points with the former ahead on superior shot aggregate of plus 21. Glen CC (62.5) and pretournament favourites Edgemead (62) lurk just off the pace with two rounds to go.

Well done to Van der Stel for an outstanding set of returns so far, considering they are one of the smallest of the 37 clubs in the district and have less than 40 male members to call on. And to think that they were once campaigning in the fifth league.

Durbanville (58) cannot be discounted for a top-three finish, but Milnerton are placed at the foot of the log and will be relegated. Likely to join them in the First Division next season rests with once-mighty Plumstead (44.5), SA Police (46) and possibly Oakdale (49.5) and newcomers Western Province CC (52.5).

SA Police’s 10-5 win at Constantia last weekend has given them a fighting chance. Their three other wins came against Milnerton, Edgemead and Oakdale. Plumstead hammered Milnerton last time out to record their third win of the campaign. Oakdale take on Milnerton today and will fancy their chances of a big win which would keep them in the top-flight.

WPCC once held top spot, but three poor efforts in their last four outings has dashed the hopes of last year’s First Division champions. The men from the southern suburbs were beaten by Constantia, Van der Stel and Edgemead, just 10 points netted from a possible 45.

Premier league fixtures today: Glen CC v Edgemead; Oakdale v Milnerton; Durbanville v WPCC; Plumstead v SA Police; Stellenbosch vd Stel v Constantia

● The women’s Muter cup bat- tle for supremacy sees front-runners Constantia and Edgemead separated by half a point going into the seventh and final round. Constantia top the eight-team standings on 43.5 points heading into their away tie with secondfrom-bottom WPCC.

They have won all but one of six matches, but just a hiccup in their final outing may come back to bite them.

Edgemead, who beat Constantia 8-3 in round one, travel to lastplaced Glen CC and should emerge with maximum points against a rival who has managed a solitary win from six starts.

Third-placed Helderberg (39) have won their last three outings on the trot and may yet have a say in the final outcome if the top two slip up. But it appears to be an unlikely scenario for the outof-towners. Two teams will be relegated and WPCC and Glen CC look the likely duo for the chop.

Muter Cup Premier League fixtures: Glen CC v Edgemead; Oakdale v Heldeberg; Somerset West v Durbanville; WPCC v Constantia
