Annual lights off for the planet

- NOMASWAZI NKOSI

SOUTH Africans have been urged to shine a light on climate change by switching off the lights this evening during Earth Hour.

The annual global campaign takes place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, and is a call to action for people around the world to do their part in making a positive difference for the planet.

“Collective action is effective and inspiring. The switching off of lights is a simple act which symbolises unity and a common desire for change. We call on all South Africans to take part,” said Morne du Plessis, head of South Africa World Wide Fund for Nature.

This year South Africa’s focus will be on food, energy, water and waste.

“The issue of water has captured everyone’s attention this year. The highest number of pledges we have received have been about saving water. It is evident people are aware of our environmental challenges and are willing to take action,” Du Plessis said.

Even in areas not connected to the electricity grid, people had taken to lighting lanterns or candles during Earth Hour.

The movement will unite a record 178 countries and territories. Locally, Cape Town, Durban and Tshwane will be turning off lights as a symbol of their commitment to climate action.

Shoprite and Checkers have also pledged to support the initiative.

“As part of the group’s standard operating procedure all non-essential lights in stores are switched off at night, saving an estimated 25 000 kWh across all stores,” said JC Smit, the group’s spokesman.
