Weekend fare with tons of flair

Stellar line-up of performers, plenty to do with friends in the city on fun days off

WITH two long weekends this month and the city is brimming with events for celebratin­g various forms of togetherne­ss, especially in regard to Human Rights Day which falls on Monday. Below is a guide to some events happening in Cape Town over the next few days.

ONE CITY MANY CULTURES CAPE TOWN FESTIVAL

The One City Many Cultures Cape Town Festival has been running for 18 years. This year, the festival celebrates the last few days of summer with events running from today until Monday at the Company’s Garden. The festival includes music performanc­es throughout the weekend, food stalls and entertainm­ent for the entire family. The music line- up includes big local names such as Jimmy Nevis, Vicky Sampson, Lucy Tops, Errol Dyers, Youngsta, Chad Saaiman, UWC Centre for the Performing Arts, Jitsvinger and many more.

Today, the festival joins forces with Cape Town Partnershi­p as part of City Walk Sat- urdays which starts at the Company’s Garden from 10am. This will include youth workshops in various creative discipline­s.

Music continues throughout the weekend until Monday. A special discussion will be held at the Iziko Museum on Monday as youth and veteran activists reflect on the role of language in preserving heritage. Throughout the day art exhibition­s will be in full swing, and there’ll be arts and craft and food stalls. There will also be a children’s entertainm­ent area for families.

JAZZ ON THE LAWNS

Jazz on the Lawns is an annual concert which celebrates Human Rights Day at the St Joseph’s Marist College in Rondebosch. Now in its fifth year, the concert brings together a host of local high school bands to perform on the school lawns on Monday. The line- up includes Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Groote Schuur High School, Elsies River High School, Bergvliet High School, Heathfield High School, Sacred Heart College and St Joseph’s Marist College. The main headline act for the concert is local songstress, Lira, with additional performanc­es by Don Vino, Jonathan Rubain and Marce Underwood.

WOODSTOCK LIVE

An initiative titled Woodstock Live launches this weekend at Trafalgar Park in Woodstock. Designed to be a concert series and communityb­uilding project, the event brings together a host of local bands which perform tomorrow at the park. The line-up includes Goodluck, Das Kapital, Mix n Blend, Los Tacos, DJ Invizable and Tresor. Food stalls and a bar area will be provided. Pre-sale tickets are available online. Children under the age of 12 get in for free.

UNITED NATIONS FOR AFRICA

Master of the marimba, internatio­nally renowned composer and percussion­ist Bongani Sotshonond­a, will be presenting United Nations for Africa on Human Rights Day. Sotshonond­a has collaborat­ed in various jazz projects all over Cape Town. The concert will be presented on Monday at the Tyisa Nabanye Barn in Tamboerskl­oof. The concert is a collaborat­ion presented by the organisers of Jazz in the Native Yards.

DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM COMIC BOOK LAUNCH

A new comic book will be launched on Human Rights Day, to celebrate the life and legacy of football player Albert Johanneson.

The book has been developed in partnershi­p with the Sheffieldb­ased organisati­on, Football Unites, Racism Divides and supported in South Africa by the SAUK Seasons 2014-2015. Archie Birch is the illustrato­r.

The comic tells the special story of an unsung hero of the game as Johanneson was the first black footballer of African heritage to participat­e in an FA Cup final.
