- ATIYYAH KHAN

TODAY is Record Store Day. For those not in the know, the phenomenon started in 2007 and is celebrated each year on the third Saturday of April worldwide.

Music lovers, vinyl fiends and musicians worldwide celebrate in various ways their shared loved for records, as well as to commemorate the independent record store. The day has grown in popularity with the resurgence of vinyl culture globally.

Typically Record Store Day features discounts and special deals on records, limited releases, in-store music performances by artists and music releases specifically for the day. There are some records pressed only for Record Store Day. Releases this year include ones by David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Johnny Cash and Madonna. Most stores will celebrate by hosting their own special event.

Over the last few years, the number of independent stores in Cape Town that specialise in selling vinyl has increased dramatically.

This year, a few of them have jumped onboard to celebrate with the rest of the world.

The Listening Room in Green Point will host an event that brings together a mini-market of record dealers. They will also have discounts on records and music equipment from the store and DJs spinning vinyl through the day.

The event is due to run from 10am until 2pm at The Cape Quarter, Somerset Road.

In the city, Roastin’ Records also features bands playing throughout the day, special deals on vinyl, food and drink stalls. The line-up includes legendary electronic act The Kalahari Surfers. The event starts at 10am at 44a Bloem Street, CBD.

Voom Voom Vintage in Observatory will feature live music inside the store for the day. Music starts at 1pm at the store, located at 15 Lower Main Road, Observatory.
