Cafe: Beerhouse Address: 223 Long Street Telephone: 021 424 3370 Hours: 11am until late, daily Dish Eaten: Chicken, sweetcorn and roast lemon chowder, garlic croutons Price: R50 IT’S NOT every day you see a lunch special offering a bowl of soup and a beer for R50 (see picture), so a midday visit to Long Street’s Beerhouse seemed like a good idea.

“Soup and beer, you are going to have soup and beer,” my dining partner said, turning up her nose. But I wasn’t fazed.

Beerhouse is a favourite, offering just about every beer under the sun and good pub grub. Their Sunday roast is one of the best in the CBD, particularly for its offering of roast potatoes and giant Yorkshire pudding (R95).

It was at one of these lazy post-Mass outings that I discovered their R50 weekday lunch special.

“Give us R50 and we will give you:...”, announced a table advert.

On Monday, for R50 I was served a chicken, sweetcorn and roast lemon chowder with garlic croutons with an Apollo Blonde (I could have opted for an Everson’s cider or a cooldrink but that would not be appropriate at Beerhouse).

My friend had the same beer and onion rings. They were quite large and served with a freshly-chopped chilli condiment The beer was light and refreshing, perfect for a sip on a sun-lit balcony on Long Street.

As for my soup, it paired well and the lemon worked out well as an ingredient in the chunky mix.

I do wish I had popped in on Thursday; the R50 special menu offered Moroccan lamb tagine, apricots, almond and mint. Then again, I’m not sure how it will pair with a light beer like the Apollo Blonde. Perhaps Beerhouse should consider a few other beer options for the special.

The R50 special has different meals every week.

Also worth noting is the Everson’s hot cider, to which you can add rum.
