Hot enough for you, yet?

Stellenbosch Slow Market’s chilli festival will hit the taste buds in just right way, writes Bianca Coleman

FOLLOWING its successful strawberry day last month, the Stellenbosch Slow Market is celebrating the hot stuff with a chilli festival.

For those brave enough to scorch their tongues, a variety of chilli products, including a variety of fresh chillies from farmers, will be on sale this month.

There will be chilli burgers from Flamed, chilli bread from Fine Pastry, chilli sauces and charcuterie from Greg’s Pure Products and Mr Pukkah, chilli sausages from Ollie’s Sausages, chilli biltong from Stokkiesdraai, chilli chocolate from Native Chocolates, chilli Chinese from Tao Chinese, chilli shwarmas from Tunisian Delights, a variety of spicy Mexican food from Taqueria Los Compadres, chilli relish from Good Natured Food as well as fresh chillies and chilli plants and “hot” products like chilli poppers and sauces. Pretty much everything you can imagine, in chilli flavour.

A chilli tasting competition with some great prizes up for grabs will raise funds for the charity Cupcakes For Kids With Cancer. Ten contestants will see who can last the longest before reaching for a glass of milk.

Entries are limited, so register by emailing ChilliHeat@outlook.com. Visitors can participate by donating R10 and then bet on who they think will be able to take the heat the longest.

A lucky draw by the (tasting) winner will determine who will win delicious chilli hampers and cash prizes. Similar prizes will be awarded to the final survivor of the tasting competition.

The Stellenbosch Slow Market takes place at Oude Libertas Estate on the corner of Oude Libertas and Adam Tas streets, Stellenbosch, every Saturday from 9am till 2pm. There is no entry fee and ample parking is available. For more information see www.slowmarket.co.za, call 0 21 886 8514 or email accounts@slowmarket.co.za.
